Tips To Deal With An Overactive Milk Supply

Breast milk feeding is one of the best ways to ensure proper growth of your baby. Loaded with approximately 400 nutrients, as well as disease-fighting elements and hormones, breast milk is highly healthy and a complete food in-itself. Feeding your baby with your breast milk for up to six months is especially good as it helps improve the baby’s cognitive development, level of intelligent and smartness.

And, it’s just not your baby, even you are widely benefitted. Breast milk feeding helps mothers lose weight, lowers the risk of getting breast cancer, protects against ovarian cancer and even reduces the risk of developing type – 2 disease. That’s all well, but what to do when your body produces too much milk? Here, in this post, we detail some essential tips on how to deal with an overactive milk supply.

  • Make sure that your baby is property latched to your breast. Most babies struggle latching to their mother’s breast in the initial days of birth. If he/she still faces trouble latching, it is best to consult a doctor.
  • Feed him/her whenever he/she is hungry.
  • Feed him/her whenever your breast feels full, even if that means that you have to wake the baby up from his/her sleep. It, apparently, is the only way to match the demand to supply of your breast milk.
  • Before feeding, express the excess milk using a breast milk pump. This helps reduce the flow of the milk and allows the baby to latch properly. This way, you will be able to feed the baby in a proper manner.
  • Store the milk of one of your breasts and let the baby latch to the other. Doing this for some time can significantly help your body to regular the supply of milk.
  • If the initial letdown of milk is the main problem you are facing, after which things get back to normal, catch the first spray in a towel and then allow your baby latch to your breast.
  • Splashing cold water on your breast is yet another way to slow down letdown.
Even through oversupply of milk may seem to be troublesome, it’s your body’s way of indicating you that you are lactating properly. If you feel that you are producing more milk than usual, you can store it for times when you would not be around to breast milk feeding the baby.

Breastmilk Storage Tips - Do’s and Don’ts

Wondering how to store breastmilk safely and hygienically? Listed here the some simple tips that can effectively help you in securing your essential milk for your baby. It is always prescribed by doctors to take proper steps in order to prevent contamination, which can be highly detrimental for your baby’s health.

  • Even before expressing or handling breast milk, it is always advised to thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water. The pumped milk must be collected in a clean, capped glass, BPA- free container. The containers must be sterilized at regular intervals in order to reduce any kind of contamination.
  • Pre-sterilized breastmilk storage bags are advised for freezing. Place the containers at the end of the refrigerator where it’s the coolest. Disposable bottle liners, if used for freezing, might require additional protection to prevent leaking and contamination. They are even much more prone to bursting and leaking and therefore are not widely suggested.

  • Glass containers provide the best protection. It is least absorbent material and reduces contamination, thereby maintaining and enhancing the taste of the milk for the baby.
  • Breastmilk storage can also be done at room temperature for up to seven hours. At specific room temperatures, it can last a bit longer, say 24 hours. It is recommended, to keep the expressed breastmilk at room temperature – less than 77 degrees F for up to six hours, in the refrigerator- 32-39 degrees F for three to eight days and frozen at 0-4 degree for up to six months.
  • Pumped breastmilk should be labelled indicating the time and the amount of the milk pumped.
  • One should always ensure that the fresh milk should not be added to the milk that is already frozen and should not be stored in a large quantity at one setting.
  • Adding warm breast milk to frozen breast milk should be avoided, as it cause the frozen milk to partially thaw.

6 Advantages of Breastfeeding – Offering Immunity to Your Baby

Babies who are breastfed are at a lower risk of suffering from infections, diseases and allergies as compared to those who are formula-fed from the beginning. Loaded with powerful vitamins, proteins and fats, a mother’s milk is a perfect blend of essential nutrients that aid in proper growth of the baby and also boost his immunity.

Of the many advantages of breastfeeding, one of the main benefits is that it improves the immunity of the baby. Let’s check out how:-

Fight’s against infant ailments

Babies who are breast-fed are naturally protected against a host of infant illnesses. Many pieces of researches have proved that breast-fed babies hardly suffer from conditions such as stomach infection, respiratory diseases and ear infection. When a mother starts breastfeeding her baby, her body automatically produces a special kind of milk called COLOSTRUM that comprises of a heavy dose of secretory immunoglobulin A (IgA). This special liquid forms a protective layer around the mucous membrane of the baby’s throat, intestines and nose. Breastmilk also contains antibodies that fight bacterial and viral diseases such as flu, urinary infection and more. In addition to these, breast-fed babies are also at a very low risk of developing diabetes later in their lives.

Prevents Allergies

Studies have shown that babies who are formula-fed are more likely to suffer from allergies that those who are breast-fed. This is because the formula milk contains cow’s milk or soy milk that do not have secretory immunoglobulin A (IgA). The absence of these vital antibodies make the walls of the nose, throat and intestine prone to infections and allergies. Therefore, it’s best to breastfeed babies. A mother’s milk also safeguards the infants against asthma and skin rashes.

Fights Cancer in Babies

The majestic milk of a mother also lowers the risk of babies developing cancer and diabetes.

Advantages of Breastfeeding

Averts SIDS risk

A wide range of studies have also proved that babies who are breastfed are at a very low risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Most gynaecologists and paediatricians recommend new moms to breastfeed their babies for as long as possible to avoid SIDS.

Enhances Intellectual Development

Experts suggest that breastfeeding boosts cognitive developing in infants. Breast-fed babies show faster language development and better IQ level by the age of 7 in comparison to those formula fed.

Helps Maintain Baby Weight

Babies who are breast-fed are reported to be healthier than those formula fed, and their chances of becoming overweight are also very less.

Of the many advantages of breastfeeding the babies, the best and most essential one is the development of bond between a mother and her baby. The skin-to-skin contact makes the little one recognize his mother’s smell and voice and feel safer and wanted. Nursing the infant also helps build a foundation of a loving bond between the two.

Breastfeeding Benefits for Mom and Their Babies

Breastmilk is an essential component that helps in ensuring a baby's healthy growth and well-being. The advantages of breastfeeding are many for both – the mothers and their babies. In addition to offering vital vitamins, minerals, and essential nutrients to the infants, it also safeguards the two against a wide range of diseases and helps in developing a healthy immune system.

Breastfeeding Benefits for the babies

Contributes to Build a Strong Intelligence Level

A wide number of studies have proved that babies who are breastfed tend to exhibit a higher level of intelligence level than those who are not. They also perform better in terms of mental agility and emotionally connect more strongly with their mothers.

A Protective Shield

Breastmilk contains many essential immunes boosting ingredients such as immunoglobulin A (lgA) and a long chain of fatty acids such as DHA, which act as a shield for babies. lgA forms a protective layer in the infant’s intestinal tract which helps fight against common food reaction. The absence of this layer can lead to inflammation in babies resulting in leaky walls of the intestine. This can further make a path for allergies to affect the infant’s immune system severely. On the other hand, the fatty acids help safeguard the baby from suffering from frequent respiratory problems.

Prevent the Danger of Obesity

Many pieces of research have shown that babies who are breastfed are at a lower risk of becoming obese. Some reasons behind the theory are as follows:-
•    Breastfed babies tend to eat better that those who are formula-fed.
•    Breastmilk has a lower level of insulin which apparently is the main stimulator of fat creation in the body.
•    Babies who are breastfed gain less weight in the initial months of birth in comparison to those who are formula-fed.

Reduces Stress and Postpartum Depression

It has been found that mothers who breastfeed their babies are at a lower risk of developing postpartum depression and stay more relaxed than other who formula-feed. It is because nursing stimulates the release of Oxytocin, a hormone which produces a calming effect in the mother's body. The hormone also helps in contraction of the mother’s uterus after delivery.

Lowers the Risk of Gaining Certain Kids of Cancers

A vast number of researchers have proved that the longer a mother breastfeeds her baby, the lower are her chances of developing certain types of cancers. Nursing for more than a year has the most positive effect on a mother.

Breastmilk is nature’s perfect formula for the babies. It not only helps feed the baby with essential nutrients necessary for his/her proper growth, build a strong bond between the two but also safeguards both – the mother and her baby against a plethora of diseases.

A Guide to Buying the Best Feeding Bottle for Your Baby

Nothing beats the joy of bringing a new life into this beautiful world. But, with this majestic feeling comes the great responsibility of taking care of your little one’s health and feeding him/her at regular intervals in an appropriate manner. While it is suggested to breastfeed your baby at the initial stage, there will come a time when you’ll have to bottle feed him/her.

Bottle feeding is no rocket science. But finding the right feeding bottle is. The market today is flooded with a myriad variety of feeding bottles in India that it is practically very challenging and tiresome to find a feeding bottle which would not only be easy to use but to clean as well.

To solve this daunting problem, we bring forth a range of unique feeding bottles that follow the baby’s growth in the most natural way. Let’s take a look!

Standard Baby Bottles

As the name says, it’s the most common type of baby feeding bottle available in the market. Ideal for babies 4-6 months old, these come with three different teats with specific shapes that allow easy feeding. The bottles also have soft silicone and grooves at the base which feel exactly like a mother’s breast.

Standard baby bottles are cheap and come in a basic shape. They are easy to sterilize and fit aptly in traditional warmers and bottle covers.

Angled Baby Bottles

Angled baby bottles are perfect for new born babies. They come with a bend in the neck of the bottle which keeps the nipple filled with milk or any other liquid, preventing the formation of air bubbles in the nipple. What’s the advantage? Your baby takes in less air, which apparently is a good thing.
When asked from Paediatricians regarding the best feeding position, they recommended semi-upright position as it helps prevent ear infection. Wondering what’s the relevance? The angle necked bottles promote such kind of feeding position, further eliminating the chances of acquiring ear infection and is also easier for the parents to hold the baby while they is feeding the baby.

Wide Neck Baby Bottle

Such bottles come with a wider neck, larger nipple and wider opening. The primary fundamental behind its shape is that the larger nipple resembles a mother’s nipple, which prevents the baby from getting confused and conveniently accept the formula. As a result, wider neck bottles are more preferred by the mothers with infants older than six months and switch between breastfeeding and formula feeding at regular intervals.

Each baby feeding bottle has its own unique features which make nursing more convenient and enjoyable for the babies and their mothers. But these bottles have two feature in common. One, they have special anti-colic valves which prevent the air from being swallowed by the babies, further reducing the risk of colic; and second, they all can be used as breast milk storage containers helping you save on maintaining two different bottles for storing and feeding.

If you are an about-to-be-mom or a newbie-mother and are looking for a feeing bottle, opt for one of the baby feeding bottles as described above and feed your tot in the most natural and convenient way.

Breastmilk Feeding Benefits for Your Baby

Breastmilk feeding is the best for your baby and its benefits extend beyond the basic nutrition. Besides containing all the nutrients and vitamins that a baby requires in the initial months of his growing years, the milk incorporates disease-fighting substances, which protect babies from meeting illness.

If you think that breastmilk offer, only this benefit then might be you are wrong! It is because breastmilk is loaded with countless more benefits. Various studies reveal that this milk prevent babies from meeting stomach viruses, ear infections, meningitis, and respiratory illness. It is also a known fact, that breastfeeding reduces the chances of Sudden Death Syndrome in babies, and hence, promote their healthy growth.

The immune building ingredient – immunoglobulin, is present in rich amount in the first milk that your body generates at the time of birth of your child. This substance forms a protective layer on your baby’s nose, throat, and intestines, and therefore prevent the child from catching infection from external sources. Every child is unique and your breastmilk caters the unique dietary requirement of your baby. Your baby responds to bacteria and virus, present in your body. However, breastmilk feeding protects your baby from such pathogens. The surprising fact is that it not only prevents babies from infection during their early growing months, but it also prevent them from infections, even when they are grown up kids. It is because breastfeeding gives an excellent boost to the immune system.

Individuals with strong immune system are tend to not catch ailments, which occur at higher age, such as diabetes, inflammatory bowel movements, high cholesterol, and more others. This feed is free from bacterial infection and is clean. For this reason, no child is allergic to breastfeed. In fact, the feed prevents babies and children from meeting allergic reactions. Secretory IgA, which is the best immune factor, is present only in breastmilk. It prevents baby from meeting any intestinal tract issue. Children who are not able to get adequate feed may develop allergic reactions in future, as their immune system is not able to develop properly.

There are situations, when a mother is not able to produce enough milk as per her child’s requirements. In such situation, they end up using artificial modes of feeding, such as formula milk. However, such form of feed is able to quench babies but are not able to serve their nutritional requirements.

If you, therefore, intend to offer your child with all above benefits then ensure to opt only for the breastmilk feeding formula.
